During the first phase of the COVID-19 lockdown, Fever FM faced an unusual challenge: how could a radio network continue entertaining and connecting people when audiences, presenters and performers were all confined to their homes?
During my tenure at HT Media Limited, we responded by conceptualising two radio-and-digital properties: 100 Hours, 100 Stars and Digital Idol, presented in Bengal as Digital Icon. Both campaigns used the intimacy of radio and the accessibility of digital platforms to bring live entertainment into people’s homes.
100 Hours, 100 Stars became a 100-hour digital carnival and tribute to COVID-19 frontline workers. It brought together leading figures from music, cinema, sports, politics and popular culture, including Asha Bhosle, Sourav Ganguly, Shashi Tharoor, Shaan, Sonakshi Sinha and many others. Performances and conversations were hosted remotely and broadcast across Fever Network’s radio and digital channels, creating a shared cultural experience during a period of physical isolation. The initiative also encouraged contributions to the PM CARES Fund.
Digital Idol extended the same spirit of participation to audiences across India, while Digital Icon adapted the format for Bengal. These digital talent hunts invited people to perform from home and gave emerging singers an opportunity to be discovered when conventional stages were unavailable.
Together, the campaigns reached audiences across the country, generated substantial digital participation and established Fever FM as more than a traditional radio station. The work received industry recognition at the Golden Mikes Awards.
